Illegal fishing in some of Lincolnshire's waterways is depleting stocks of carp as poachers try to cash in on the fish's value abroad.
The Environment Agency's environmental crime team has asked anglers in the county to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour.
Mark Rumble, one of the agency's crime investigators, said nets or multi-hook lines were used to catch fish.
He said: "These people don't use a rod and line, but nets or spears."
Mr Rumble added: "We need to stop the perpetrators of these crimes.
"Some of these fish are worth quite a lot of money. A big specimen carp can be worth up to £5,000 and a lot of carp are illegally imported from Europe where they grow bigger.
"One diseased or parasite-carrying fish introduced into another fishery can have a massive impact on that fishery."
As well as targeting people who illegally remove fish from lakes and rivers the agency's purge on illegal fishing hopes to protect eels, whose numbers it says have dropped dramatically

Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire has been launched by the Environment Agency.
Operation Tapestry aims to tackle illegal fishing, such as netting and the use of long-lines - a fixed unattended line with one or more hooks.
The move also aims to protect eels, whose numbers have fallen by 95% since the 1980s.
Intelligence will be gathered to deploy resources to catch those responsible.
Environmental crime officer Mark Rumble said: "We need to reel in the perpetrators of these crimes.
"Some of these fish are worth quite a lot of money. A big specimen carp can be worth up to £5,000 and a lot of carp are illegally imported from Europe where they grow bigger.
"One diseased or parasite-carrying fish introduced into another fishery can have a massive impact on that fishery."
He added: "This type of crime threatens the livelihoods of law-abiding fisheries owners, the future of angling and the environment."

Agency says Illegal river
fishermen flee patrols
Published on Wed Apr 07 08:32:07 BST 2010
A CRACKDOWN on people fishing illegally on the River Nene in Peterborough has so far proved fruitless.
The Environment Agency vowed to get tough on anglers who flout fishing laws on the river but, despite regular patrols, no offenders have yet been found and no fines dished out.
It said potential law-breakers had been spotted, but escaped before officers could take action.
A spokesperson said: “We have been patrolling the river but have not found anybody who was fishing illegally. We did have a couple of people who caught sight of us and ran off.”
As the fishing season is over, people found fishing the river can be fined up to £2,500.
Former Mayor of Peterborough Marion Todd admitted the area near her home in Potters Way has been quiet in the past few weeks, but that she has seen people with fishing tackle. She added: “I haven’t found where they’re fishing yet.”
To report illegal fishing, call the Environment Agency on 0800 807060
